Edward Snowden to speak at SXSW – outlines NSA targets both home and abroad

Edward Snowden, currently in Russia, will speak via live link to the SXSW annual conference in Austin, TX on Monday. Snowden will discuss and dialogue with attendees on the overall NSA situation and how it has used and targeted the ISP’s and service vendors to obtain personal information as well as how the technology industry can win back its public. He proposes the development of new privacy technology and educating consumers on how to manage their own privacy.

Snowden disclosed the NSA’s technical spying on the general public, cell phone and social network users, and foreign leaders. The spying and cell phone monitoring has caused serious differences with allies such as Germany and other nations in NATO. Snowden is considered a hero in many technology quarters as well as drawing the ire of the USA’s myriad of secret intelligence gathering organizations. Lawsuits and serious debate about 4th amendment rights have resulted in a serious National debate abut the Constitutionality of the NSA’s activities. The NSA’s activities have caused serious rifts in relations with allies as well.

Snowden has selectively released documents from those which he downloaded before leaving the country, currently in asylum in Russia. he is still in possession of an unknown number number of documents. Snowden has been able to arouse a technology-consuming world into realizing the ability of that technology to search its users and gather personal information as easily and secretively as they think they use it them selves. His appearance will initiate the next phase of the debate, how consumers can preserve privacy in a proactive way. Everyone who can should attend this online event.
